The core courses in Creative Writing are two-hour, tutor-led workshops in which you’ll present your work-in-progress, and critique the work of your fellow students. You’ll also attend a weekly two-hour seminar exploring techniques and issues specific to your practice (either fiction or poetry), and the statements and theories of practitioners.
David Bishop, MA, FHEA, is the author of twenty published novels, an award-winning screenwriter, and a comics creator of nearly 30 years standing. He is programme leader for Creative Writing at Edinburgh Napier and co-created the unique MA. Laura Lam, MA, is the author of five published novels.

Creative Writing at Brunel organises a hugely successful annual series of public writer readings by some of Britain's most exciting authors, which provide an opportunity for all students to debate and mingle with professional writers. Additionally, we annually publish anthologies of students' writing.
The Creative Writing discipline supports research in contemporary writing and PhD study focused on creative writing. This research activity is closely associated with the discipline's Contemporary Cultures of Writing Research Group and Wasafiri, the Arts Council-funded magazine of international contemporary writing based at the OU.

Entry requirements. Our Creative Writing PhD students come from a variety of academic backgrounds, nationalities, and writing experiences, but what successful applicants have in common is enormous writing talent and potential, and the commitment and ability to engage critically with the contexts in which they write, and the processes and techniques they employ.
The creative element of her PhD thesis is a novel, a love story set in Dublin and London in the early nineties, which develops two inter-related themes: the role of trauma memory in the search for self, and how that is troubled by the mother-daughter relationship.
The PhD focused on Creative Writing includes several kinds of research: Acts of writing, in their stages of spontaneous drafting, considered revision and redrafting, are recognised in the PhD as a form of exploratory research that emerges from and refers to the creative process. PhD researchers keep notebooks and a record of source materials.
Edinburgh Napier's creative writing MA does not offer a poetry option. We repeat, poetry is not a requirement. There are plenty of other great courses with brilliant poets on the faculty - if you want to study poetry, seek them out. We have had prize-winning poets as students on our programme, but we don't teach or critique poetry.
